Two Actions You Can Take to Protect Your Data

by | Friday, June 30th, 2023

A network breach is one of the scariest situations a business owner can encounter. It can rock the foundation of your business to its core, especially if the unauthorized access results in a data breach. There are a lot of things that a business can do to build awareness, set up protections, and create a computing infrastructure that is mostly secure. This week, we will discuss two actions that every business should take in order to protect its data.

How Important is Data?

Before we get into the two actions that need to be taken, we’d like to highlight just how important data is. Businesses have intellectual property and internal communications that they don’t want leaked as well as sensitive customer financial and personal information, that if stolen or leaked would cause major headaches for decision makers. This can include loss of revenue from downtime or the loss of customers.

Actions You Can Take

There are several actions you can take to keep your network and data more secure, but we really want to talk about two today.

Backup and Recovery

If protecting your data is a major consideration—and it should be—you need to have a comprehensive data backup and recovery plan in place. At Compudata, we offer our backup and disaster recovery (BDR) service that takes incremental backups of the data you choose to back up. That means that your backup runs as you create data, effectively protecting your business against data loss.

The BDR is a device that not only backs up data in-house, it also sends it to the cloud for situations where you need to restore data remotely. If your business is hit with malware or a storm knocks out access to your IT, your BDR can run a virtualized server so that you have access to your data while you sort through tough times.

Patch Management

Hackers are the ultimate opportunists. They look for vulnerabilities in an organization’s practices and technology to weasel their way in and siphon out data and try to steal what they can and get out. These cyberthreats are just getting more and more sophisticated, and can find small gaps in about any system to gain access and wreak havoc.

This is why it is essential that you have a plan to keep the software that your business uses up-to-date with the latest patches and updates. By updating your software regularly, you significantly minimize the risk your business is under. Our technicians spend a lot of time handling technology pain points for business and one of the glaring weaknesses we typically see when we take a new client is that their software hasn’t been updated, leaving potential holes in their network defenses.
